Psalm 63:1 You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. David, one of the most famous worshippers in the Bible frmly places God in His rightful place and gives God His proper worth as frst in his priorities. The frst four words declare that God is indeed God and that He is the God of David’s life. WHAT DO WE WORSHIP? All people everywhere engage in worship. A sacred cow, religious leader, rock star, Saturday afternoon football, family or career – these are all potential objects of worship. The primary distinction between true worship and false worship is the object being worshipped. God can only be the focus of true worship. Declaring the worth of anything else above God is distorted, corrupt and sinful but can still be classifed as worship. We can discover what we truly worship – what we give the most worth to – by asking ourselves some simple questions: • To what do we devote the most of our discretionary time? (refects our passion) • About what do we spend the most time talking about? (refects our thought life) • On what do we spend most of our discretionary money? (refects our priorities) The sobering reality is that whatever or whoever flls in the blanks has taken the position of ‘god’ in our lives. If worship is shown by the choices I make in life, then worship must be more than singing in church. Stuart Beattie
