Music “Music ministry has played a large role in
Ministry
A few folks currently involved in our music
ministry team were asked to share some thoughts
about (i) what our music ministry means to them;
(ii) why they are involved; (iii) what they enjoy
most about being involved; and (iv) why they think
others should be involved.
Here’s what they said…
“Like many other ministries, the music ministry
can be a chore, a challenge, a real blessing and an
absolute privilege, often in the same week. The
reward for me comes when the music serves as
a real vehicle to help people connect with God in
genuine worship. We do want to be good at what
we do musically but the real success comes when
everyone in the service engages. Music is such a
powerful medium and it has the real potential to
add so much to our services. I would encourage
any musicians to see where they can help – it’s a
diverse church with diverse music. I can’t
remember the last time I played a full service
without making several mistakes but I imagine
that God smiles and appreciates my efforts!”
Geoff Spence (Bass)
“I’ve been involved in music ministry for the past
4 years. I love the opportunity to worship our God
with everyone and doing this has really helped
me to become more confident. I really enjoy the
chance to meet with new people and join together
in fellowship and fun. Everyone who is passionate
about music should definitely get involved in
music ministry to both develop their talents but
also to join a community that encourages growth
and relationships.”

deepening my faith through worshipping,
praying and ministering with other musicians.
It has allowed me to worship God in a safe, loving
environment with people who care. When I
became a Christian, I felt God calling me to
worship Him. In doing this, I felt true joy and peace
for the first time. Being able to be vulnerable
before God in the place of worship is a big thing
for me. I also enjoy the fellowship and great fun
that we all have together in our music ministry
team. I think that people with a passion for Jesus
and music would really benefit from getting
involved as our music ministry is an amazing
community of people who all sing of a greater
love.”

“Being a part of the music ministry in High Kirk
means a lot to me. I take it very seriously. It is a
very important role within our church. We, as
musicians, have the responsibility of leading God’s
people in worship and that should not be taken
lightly. I’m involved in the music ministry because
I believe it’s the area of service that God wants me
in. I started playing in church when I was 10 and
certainly didn’t view it that way then. Now
however, it is very clear to me that God wants
me to use the gift He gave to me for His glory.
I love drumming! Having the opportunity to drum
while giving all the Glory to God and leading His
people in worship is pretty special. I’ve had the
pleasure of working with some very talented and
very famous musicians over the years, as well as
playing in some pretty cool places but nothing
gives me the same feeling as playing in church! I
love spending time preparing songs, listening to
different versions. I’m very blessed at the minute
to be working with a group of great musicians in
church. We work well together and Neil (our band
leader) keeps us sweet by bringing us breakfast
for the morning services! I don’t think playing in
church is as easy as people think. I can’t just turn
up and rock out! Therefore, I don’t think people
can just fancy a wee go at playing at the front. You
need to be musically competent for sure, but for
me, you need to have a real desire for worship and
a sense of calling to lead God’s people in worship.
That aside, the feeling of hearing the congregation
singing to God, in your direction, as one voice,
is something else and regularly gives me goose
bumps!”
